Best Practices & FAQ

Transporting/unpacking

Rosen Aviation IFE displays and electronics are designed and certified to meet all necessary safety requirements, and are therefore more robust and survivable than typical home electronics. However, contemporary electronics in any capacity can still be fragile, and should always be packaged and transported correctly.

  • Always consult packing and unpacking instructions before handling Rosen equipment (see unpacking video for detailed instructions)
  • Always keep and safely store display packaging crate or box that unit was originally shipped in
  • When return shipping for any reason, always use original display crate or box and packaging
    • For large displays, wooden display crates must be strapped flat to a pallet

Handling

It is important to note that, while Rosen Aviation IFE displays and cabin electronics are designed to withstand the unique environmental challenges found in an aircraft cabin, all equipment should be handled with care at all times.

  • WATCH: Detailed unpacking and handling video instructions
  • Always consult packing and unpacking instructions before handling Rosen equipment
  • Do not apply direct forces to display panel surface or edges
    • When handling displays 42-inches and larger, it is advised that two or more persons assist with handling and transportation
  • Always keep and safely store original display shipping crate or box
  • Do not remove protective film on Rosen displays until final installation is complete

Firmware updates

Modern electronics, such as smartphones, laptops and smart TV’s all require firmware updates, sometimes frequently. Firmware updates allow manufacturers to unlock new functionality, fix bugs or issues, and ensure a seamless and consistent user experience. Rosen Aviation IFE and cabin electronics are no exception.

  • Firmware updates can be completed via wired Ethernet or USB
    • For wired Ethernet updates, the following are required:
      • Rosen PURR tool
      • Rosen ICD
      • Router
      • Laptop or computer
    • Rosen requires Ethernet or USB inputs are readily integrated into design architecture for ease of access to support future firmware updates (for questions, contact technical support)
    • The latest firmware revision can be found on the product page of our website (must register username and password to access)
    • To program using the USB port, refer to the Outline & Installation drawing to ensure the correct wiring connections are made to enable USB OTG (for programming). Consult Rosen Customer Support for technical assistance.

Command and control

The modern aircraft cabin is an increasingly integrated environment, comprised of multiple systems and communication protocols. With this in mind, we have designed all past, current and future products with multiple methods of command and control.

  • The following methods can be used for command and control of Rosen IFE displays
      • IR remote and receiver (Rosen recommended form of command and control)
      • Wired Ethernet
      • RS232
      • Discrete

Image Retention

All display technologies are at risk of image retention if continuous static imagery is displayed, and proper integration and mitigation protocols should be considered at base level architecture.

  • IMPORTANT: do not display static imagery on any Rosen 4K display for extended periods of time
    • For integration testing, Rosen recommends using dynamic, moving content or moving test signal screens (no static imagery)
  • Avoid any of the following at all times:
    • Static logos
    • Static test signals such as colored boxes or black/white gradients
    • Menu banners or icons
    • Static moving map screens
    • Photographs (for slideshows or personalized art, Rosen recommends any images are set to cycle intermittently)
  • For 4K OLED displays 42-inch and larger, please ensure all units have at least firmware 111785 Rev L installed
    • Rev L features automatic pixel refresh cycles that significantly reduce the risk of image retention, improving image quality and panel life

Repair Services

Rosen Aviation offers industry-leading repair and warranty services. If any Rosen display or equipment should need diagnostics and/or repair services (both in warranty and out of warranty), consider the following.

  • Please contact our Repair Station prior to initiating any return activities
    • IMPORTANT: do not initiate return shipping without Return Authorization Number (RMA). Contact Repair Station to receive an RMA
    • Ensure your unit can be repaired
    • Generate any warranty claims
    • Rosen recommends verifying all inputs, wiring, connections and IFE/CMS system commands prior to initiating return shipping for failures
      • Although technical issues may manifest on display panel (i.e. no video), the root source may originate elsewhere
    • Full warranty information can be found in Rosen Terms & Conditions

Technical manuals and other docs

Rosen Aviation IFE displays and cabin electronics are designed with the user in mind. Due to the increasing complexity of the aircraft cabin environment, we advise all technicians or personnel consult the proper Technical Manual prior to integration or before attempting any adjustments.

  • You can find respective Technical Manuals and other supporting documents on the product page of our website (must register username and password to access)
  • For test and certification reports or 3D models, contact Customer Service

End-of-life (EOL) and product recycling

Rosen Aviation offers Repair Station support and services for many products after they have been discontinued from our current catalog. Our in-house Repair Station is certified with FAA, EASA, UK CAA and CAAC.  Contact Repair Services for more information.

In our continued pursuit of perfection, Rosen adheres to environmental and sustainability initiatives such as LEED, RoHS, and REACH standards when possible. Additionally, Rosen’s internal Green Team manages our organization’s various policies and initiatives focused on elimination of wastes, a decreased environmental footprint, and increased efficiency.

Rosen recommends recycling any and all CMS/IFE components following uninstallation from the aircraft with local electronics recyclers. Alternatively, customers can return CMS/IFE products and components back to Rosen; we will recycle all applicable materials with Next Step Recycling or other local recyclers.
